National Fire Door Safety Week 2021. Focussing attention on the vital role of fire doors.

National Fire Door Safety Week has been going since 2013. It’s a mass public awareness campaign to focus attention on the vital role that fire doors play in protecting people and property. The campaign is managed by the British Woodworking Federation and is supported by the Home Office’s National Fire Safety campaign, the National Fire Chief’s Council and London Fire Brigade.
National Fire Door Safety Week 2021 runs from 20th - 26th September.
Why fire doors matter
Fire doors are intended to compartmentalise a fire. They allow safe evacuation of buildings. They need to be manufactured to specified standards that keep a fire out, but allow the fire service in. They also need to be expertly installed, regularly maintained and never ever propped open.

It’s a 5 Step Fire Door Check and clearly and succinctly shows how anyone can check if there might be an issue with a fire door, and when they should report it. It covers the what of gaps, seals, hinges, certification, and closing, the why these matter and the how to check them. It would be a very useful one-page A4 poster for a staff room.
In a public building, office space, or school a nominated fire marshal or fire warden should always be up to date with fire door regulations and ensure fire doors are maintained. It’s also crucial that all employees are aware of where the fire doors are in any building they work in or visit for work purposes and know that they should never be wedged open.
Everyone has a role to play in ensuring a fire door performs as it should, from the manufacturer through to the building users.
