World First Aid Day 2021 to raise awareness of the importance of first aid and First Aid in Schools

Since 2000, the second Saturday in September has been recognised as World First Aid Day - a day to raise public awareness of how first aid can save lives. This year it fell on 11th September and the global theme was First Aid in Schools.

Global awareness days are a great way of getting the important messages across to the wider public about the importance of first aid training and how it can save lives, however, we want to make sure school staff are fully trained to deal with issues that might arise on school premises every day.

Anyone who works with children knows that dealing with trips and falls resulting in cuts and bruises are regular occurrences in schools, however there are many other issues where first aid training can save lives.

First aid training for those working with babies, children and young people teaches you how to recognise and respond to choking, fractures, anaphylactic shock, electric shock, allergic reactions, burns and scalds, asthma attacks, seizures, bites and stings, poisoning, bleeding, and more. Having a trained first aider in your school will ensure you are equipped to deal with all these issues.

On completion of training successful candidates will be able to carry out an illness assessment, understand and appreciate the need to record (and report where necessary*) incidents and actions, plan for first aid emergencies and know when to call for medical assistance.

Schools are responsible for the health and safety of all pupils whilst they are at school or on a school trip. First Aid for All training courses ensure anyone working with children is prepared and able to deal with accidents and emergencies as and when they arise.

*Schools must report serious accidents, outbreaks of disease or dangerous incidents to the HSE.
